I don't see any documentation here or much information within the plug-in about the required data format, so I'll specify it here for those looking (including myself in the future once I forget this again)...

The plug-in expects a JSON string resulting from an array of dictionaries. Seemingly anything else will produce a hard-to-understand error. The property names of the dictionary entries will become the column names when the "header" option is enabled.

e.g.

How does the grouping of rows and columns work? I have this question too. I have a nested JSON where I want to display the first set of key values at the very top as a sort of header and the rest of the 'n' values in tabular format below that. How do I use this plugin to achieve that ?

Also a suggestion for any future versions: in addition to "starting row", it might be nice to select "starting column" (maybe an optional parameter that defaults to 1), in the case of having a "dummy" / "spacer" column in the template for a report like many of mine do. I do recognize that it's possible to have the JSON declare a "dummy column" (with no data in it) which accomplishes this, but it feels like there should be some 'official' solution to this rather than having to use an ad-hoc workaround.

I believe this is a bug: when running the smart service (in my case, successive throwaway test runs), if the output file name matches an existing file (presumably in the same folder, though I didn't test this), it seems to not even genereate anything; there is simply no file created, nothing saved into the "new excel document created" ACP or PV, but also nothing in "Error Message" and the "Error Occurred" output is left as "false" as if nothing had gone wrong.

Since Appian doesn't rely on unique file names in any sense, this seems like an unintentional error. But if it's the intended functionality (for reasons I don't quite understand), then I would suggest the smart service be updated such that an error message is thrown when it happens, since if this happens in the wild it will probably only create confusion.
