You don't need SSL for accessing Appian from external system. There are few things you need to keep in mind for authentication:
1. For web API, you need to either use a https basic authentication or a standard forms based login(Also called SSO). SSO is normally used for user-initiated Web-API calls. For e.g. If you are invoking an Appian Web API from a user's browser.
2. In case of embedded interface, you have to create a SSO using SAML. You can find more info on this in docs.appian.com/.../SAML_for_Single_Sign-On.html

Is your external system accessing a web API ? Or are you using embedded interfaces to access Appian functionalities?
