What exactly do you want to achieve. if the user is not having access to the parent folder. how will the user get access to the child folder. its like you are giving keys of your bedroom to your guest without giving the keys to your main door. which do not solves the purpose. please advice if I understood your problem well.

That's the only way to change the default security. Change the default security in parent folder and make the child inherit it or not inherit it.

Hi hpcole,

As per my understanding I have attached a screen shot to make you understand about the document folder security.

You can see the above screen shot, where Default(All other Users) have no permission levels .In order to give rights to the users it is best practice to use only groups to configure a security.
