we're running appian.ear and serch-server in a websphere cluster. An important thing to look out for is which application data needs to be shared and which has to be local forum.appian.com/.../Configuring_Backup_and_Restoration.html
besides that I think the WAS setup is explained in the manual as well.

Thank you for your quick input. I had started reading on the first URL you mentioned. In general, i was aware of creating a cluster setup for the application servers and creating a cluster JMS topic. I just needed APPIAN specific details on this setup.
