Some nodes gain new features in new versions of Appian. Existing applications will just keep working. In case you want to use these new features, you will need to make some changes. But only then.

While migrating i noted on thing that the send email node which is used in older version of pm do not have the custom sender field ,to use that feature i must need to delete and use new send email service node.Is it necessary to replace every node to use new features of that node, nodes didn't update itself?

Yes. I would first check the plugins and install the latest versions on the existing environment if possible. Then deploy to the new one.

Hi Stefan,

Application as well as Infra needs to be migrated.

Is it correct to assume that import of package to the higher version will work considering we remove all the deprecated function/smart services and plugins..?

Is this about the migration of the Appian platform or about the applications?

For the applications, I suggest to set up a test environment and do a functional test. In general, Appian is backwards compatible. Check plugins and versions. Then plan some time to update the applications to the new or changed functionality.

That's a pretty big migration.

This is what it says for the 21.4 upgrade

This guide assumes you are on Appian version 20.2 or higher. If you are on a lower version of Appian, upgrade to 20.2 first before upgrading to the current release.

When you check out 20.2 it says the following:

The following steps are required to upgrade self-managed installations of Appian to the current release. If you are on a version of Appian lower than 19.1, you must first upgrade to 19.1 or higher before upgrading to the current release.

I'm not sure if you can go straight from 17.1 to 19.1 - and the documentation for 19.1 doesn't seem to be available. I would suggest you contact support to get that information.
