Yes you can do that, have all your update logic in a process model using Write to Records smart service.

Then call the process model using a!startProcess() or a!startProcessLink() from the interface

OK, but what exactly is this "this"? I mean, from a distance, records and CDTs are not much different. They represent a data structure and use a slightly different syntax.

You would need to use the RecordType data toolset. "Write Records", etc. Have you been through the documentation?
