That is what we have been doing. We have a timer that will terminate using an exception. I was just trying to be more proactive and terminate as soon as a user clicks the link. We actually have 3 links that a user can choose from.

You can only have one link associated with an interface component so if you make it a record link you cannot submit the form as well. But if you do navigate to the Record you can simply let the Task timeout and have the process terminated using an exception so that it isn't sitting in memory anymore.

Is it possible to have a record link be part of the submit link? In other words have the submit link go to the record associated with the link

Why not a simple a!submitLink() labelled, for example, 'Close' ? This in effect is a link that acts as a submit button does.
