Thanks @jsonr411. Tried that. I feel there could be something in the document that Appian com.appiancorp.suiteapi.knowledge.Document API doesn't seem to like and could be something other than a merge field.

Have a look at all the merge data that is being passed in, particularly for any special characters that would normally be encoded when used in HTML/XML

Fantastic, thanks @tim.clarke. That's sorted two docx'es by replacing "&" with "&" in the merge fields. There's another one though that doesn't seem to have those in the merge fields. They are there in the docx but underlying .xml seems to be correctly representing them as "&" :-)

Back in my day it was usually caused by "&" characters in the merge data.... :-)
