You can set custom required message:
forum.appian.com/.../SAIL_Recipes

In case you want to go back to previous page you can use "skipValidation" property of the button field as and when required.

If this is on a SAIL form you can set up a custom validation message:
forum.appian.com/.../SAIL_Recipes

Can you explain why the field is readOnly though? If that option is set, the user will not be able to modify it, and then the form will get stuck
