It sounds as though you're describing a preference for what is essentially direct file system access.
That's not what this plugin does.
Expanding on what Carlos Santander mentioned already, the plugin does support a few protocols, but you'll need to choose one to use in front of the directory in order for Appian to establish a connection.

The SFTP Smart Services plugin is used to connect to SFTP servers, so your remote server needs to expose that folder via SFTP.
