Hi Hemalathat, which version of Appian did you use to test? I forgot to mention that we are experiencing this Appian version 6.6.1. It sounds like those special characters are allowed in the later releases.

At symbols (@)
Periods (.)
Underscores (_)
Hyphens (-)

I tried giving periods and special accented characters for first name and last name. It is also accepted. As I tried, given below are the special characters that are accepted in First Name or Last Name:
@ _ - = : . ? > <
