We had this issue as well and it was due to a product bug that corrupted file on upload to Appian - open a support case and they'll sort it out.

If you are having issues with documents opening in the browser or client by default, you may need to change the library setting. To do this, navigate to the Library having issues > Gear Icon (in the upper right corner) > Library Settings > Advanced settings > Opening Documents in the Browser.
