You can invoke this web service using SoapUI first to see the XML of the SoapEnvelope then you send this as the body of the request as any text in Appian

We are reviewing our options based on your comment at this point. We also have a support ticket opened.

Meanwhile, are you aware of any code snippets on calling a web service using HTTP Smart Service? Is this a common practice?

For empty optional text items Appian will send the empty element. If you web service is not able to ignore that you can build your own SOAP envelope and send it using the "HTTP Query Smart Service." forum.appian.com/.../HTTP_Query_Smart_Service.html if running 7.7 or the Send HTTP Request plug-in if using 7.6 and older
