I think using sftp will be a good approach for this. Appian have services to send file to a sftp server and to fetch it from there.

It will depend on what services your on premise system exposes. We use SharePoint internally with Appian cloud using the SP wsdls. If you're able to with your infrastructure you could also consider SFTP.
