Thanks for the confirmation - I believe you're correct that the plug-in doesn't allow you to pick individual columns to be read, but this can be managed by grouping columns as you've done. Thanks for the suggestions.
Second scenario worked perfect.
For the first scenario, we can define number of columns, but not the specific columns. Anyway, we modified the customer template to re order the columns which we need read. In that way, we achieved the task.

1) the Parse Excel to CDT smart service within Excel Tools should allow you to do this pretty easily

2) I haven't tried, but i would guess this functionality should work for protected sheets as long as it's openable to view - please try and let us know if there is any issue
