The best tool I know of to update running process instances is the IFM Manager plug-in, which includes an instructions PDF in its download file.

Thank you, Mike, for your response. In a discussion regarding the process instances with my colleagues this topic popped up and one said that the plugin is used to update the old process instances to the latest/ current version. So would like to know more about this.

What solution are you trying to find? What is the issue you're trying to solve? I don't personally know much about this plug-in, but you'll get better answers here if you supply some further details.
