Which smart service you are using, if you are using Any doc to PDF then check for open office port whether it is running or not otherwise as Eduardo said check for logs...

Reproduce and review, if using JBoss, the <JBOSS_HOME>\\standalone\\log\\server.log file, if there's an exception while creating the document it should be there. Reproduce as many times as necessary while monitoring that log.
