Pdf form uses&nbsp;<span>XML Forms Architecture (XFA), which is different from a traditional pdf file. Although the extension will be .pdf for both. You cannot use ### to bind variables and generate pdf using this smart service. The template you provide must be a pdf form, not a normal pdf.
