When u have some place holder value, if the value is null, the drop down will work without throwing error. Make sure that the value should not be null if you don't have place holder. or have a if condition to check the "ri!EWR_EPMPARFPipelineList[ri!selectedRow_int].MATERIAL_GRADE_VALUE is null if it is null give a default value with in the choice values.

Yes, you are right. When you load, it should be null but choice value ID should not when you are storing

but it will be null when you trying to create new record. its working absolutely fine with other dropdowns.
I have added placeholder tag and seems to be working fine.
placeholderLabel: cons!GLOB_LABEL_DROPDOWN_PLACEHOLDER,

not sure how this related though.

Just make sure that your ri!EWR_EPMPARFPipelineList[ri!selectedRow_int].MATERIAL_GRADE_VALUE Should not be null
