What I meant was, that the exchange rate would be gotten (live) via API, and then the actual conversion math would be handled by the expression rule that wraps the API call.

I think APIs would work. But as the currency conversions change every day expression rules might not do the job.

It looks as if there are a few different free (with registration) and/or low-cost currency convertor APIs available, which you could use with an integration or similar to create your own expression rule that does conversions...

AFAIK, I don't think Appian as any Out of the box functionality for this, I think you need to use integration/plugin for this requirement.
