As we are getting values from API, I think the dropdown contains < 100 values only. We have tried custom picker UI, that is not matching our requirement so searching for alternatives.

Sorry, then you need to stay with a custom picker. One question. how many items do you need to manage in the dropdown? If this is a high number (>100) and backed by a database table, then I think the picker is the better option.

Unfortunately we are using 20.2 version, is there any alternative approach for this functionality ?

With 20.3 the drop down can do that for you. Check docs.appian.com/.../Appian_Release_Notes.html
