You can finde out be checking for the display value:

text() returen text
The text() function allows you to format Number, Date, Time, or Date and time values as you convert them into text strings.
check "returns" as well.

for the text component you need a displey value of type text.

For datefield you nee a value of type "date"

Not just textField, you can use any field that supports free text. i.e. text field, paragraph field, rich text component, rich text display field etc.

And don't forget to display in a a!textField when using text() function. I tried to do that in a!dateTimeField component in UI, and totally messed up the date. Turned out I had to use a!textField instead/

Use the text() function to format the value in any way you want.
