Symptoms

Search server fails to start with the following exception found in <APPIAN_HOME>\logs\search-server\search-server.log:

[WARN ][org.elasticsearch.transport.netty] [Node localhost:9500] exception caught on transport layer [[id: 0xe02114e6, /127.0.0.1:46664 => /127.0.0.1:9500]], closing connection
java.io.StreamCorruptedException: invalid internal transport message format, got (16,3,1,0)
at org.elasticsearch.transport.netty.SizeHeaderFrameDecoder.decode(SizeHeaderFrameDecoder.java:63)

Cause

This happens due to the lack of disk space on the server which hosts the search server.

Action

Add disk space and restart the search server. The hardware requirements documented here provides general guidelines regarding the necessary hardware allotment for an Appian environment.
