Symptoms

Attempting to use a custom component plugin results in the following error in the application server log:

YYYY-MM-DD HH-MM-SS [Appian Work Item - <WORK_ITEM_NUMBER> - <ENGINE_NAME> : CatchupRequest] 
ERROR com.appiancorp.process.engine.CatchupRequest - Failed to register catchup (2), can retry java.lang.NullPointerException
...
YYYY-MM-DD HH-MM-SS [Appian Work Item - <WORK_ITEM_NUMBER> - <ENGINE_NAME> : PublishRuleRequest] 
ERROR com.appiancorp.process.engine.PublishRuleRequest - Could not publish rules java.lang.NullPointerException

The errors will also be seen in the respective engine logs: <APPIAN_HOME>/logs/db_*.log.

Cause

This issue has been addressed via AN-127095 in Appian 19.1 Hotfix Package A.
