KB-2008 Service accounts log warning messages upon authentication

This issue has been resolved in an Appian hotfix/new Appian version. Please apply the latest hotfix to your Appian installation or upgrade to the latest version of Appian.

Symptoms

The following warning message appears in the application server log every time service accounts authenticate:

WARN com.appiancorp.suiteapi.security.auth.AuthenticationProviderWrapper - Empty SCS key returned. <API user> will not be able to access Secure Credential Store.

It is expected that service accounts cannot access the secure credential store. This is because service accounts are intended only for invoking Web APIs. This message can safely be ignored.

Cause

The logging has been improved so that this warning message is not logged for service accounts. This issue has been addressed via AN-141740 in the following hotfixes/versions:

Action

Apply the latest hotfix to your Appian installation or upgrade to the latest version of Appian.

Symptoms

The following warning message is logged in the application server log every time a service account authenticates:

WARN  com.appiancorp.suiteapi.security.auth.AuthenticationProviderWrapper - Empty SCS key returned. <API user> will not be able to access Secure Credential Store.

This can be confusing when seen repetitively in the logs.

Service Accounts in Appian are more limited then a standard user. The intention with Service Accounts is that they are used only for API key authentication to web apis. Service Accounts do not need access to the Secure Credential Store in the same way other users will need access.

For example: A user can authorize an OAuth Authorization code connected system and the user specific token will be stored in the Secure Credential Store. If this user did not have access to the SCS then they could not store and access this token. This would break the OAuth Authorization Code feature.

Since Service accounts are only used in Api Key Authentication they do not need access to the Secure Credential Store.

The logging SHOULD be improved so that this warning is not logged for Service Accounts. This warning should be logged for other users since it is warning that some features will not be available for this user account.
