Purpose

Major platform upgrades can be a daunting task. Upgrading Appian from lower versions to the latest version cannot be done in one session as Appian has changed significantly over time, requiring a series of upgrades. The purpose of this article is to provide self-managed customers a path to upgrade their installations to the latest version of Appian.

Instructions

For assistance with upgrading from deprecated versions, please open a Support Case to request any needed documentation to perform the upgrade.

Appian 17.2

To upgrade to Appian 17.2, the installation must be on Appian 7.11 or later.

Appian 18.4

To upgrade to Appian 18.4, the installation must be on Appian 17.2 or later.

Appian 19.4

To upgrade to Appian 19.4, the installation must be on Appian 18.2 or later.

Appian 21.1

To upgrade to Appian 21.1, the installation must be on Appian 19.4 or later.

Appian 22.2

To upgrade to Appian 22.2, the installation must be on Appian 21.1 or later.

Appian 22.3

To upgrade to Appian 22.3, the installation must be on Appian 21.2 or later.

Appian 22.4

To upgrade to Appian 22.4, the installation must be on Appian 21.2 or later.

Appian 23.1

To upgrade to Appian 23.1, the installation must be on Appian 21.2 or later.

Appian 23.2

To upgrade to Appian 23.2, the installation must be on Appian 21.3 or later.

Appian 23.3

To upgrade to Appian 23.3, the installation must be on Appian 21.4 or later.

Appian 23.4

To upgrade to Appian 23.4, the installation must be on Appian 22.1 or later.

Appian 24.1

To upgrade to Appian 24.1, the installation must be on Appian 22.1 or later.

Appian 24.2

To upgrade to Appian 24.2, the installation must be on Appian 22.2 or later.

Appian 24.3

To upgrade to Appian 24.3, the installation must be on Appian 22.3 or later.

Appian 24.4

To upgrade to Appian 24.4, the installation must be on Appian 23.1 or later.

Appian 25.1

To upgrade to Appian 25.1, the installation must be on Appian 23.2 or later.

Appian 25.2

To upgrade to Appian 25.2, the installation must be on Appian 23.3 or later.

Appian 25.3

To upgrade to Appian 25.3, the installation must be on Appian 23.4 or later.

Note: Appian 25.3 will be the last supported non-containerized version and supported with hotfixes and critical updates for its full support period. Starting Appian 25.4, all new versions of Appian will require containers managed by Kubernetes to run in a self-managed environment. Please see the 24.4 release notes and frequently asked questions for more details.

Note: Starting from June 27, 2025 for all supported versions at that time, the configure script is to be downloaded separately rather than bundled with the installer package. The reference number for this is DPP-5138. Please pay attention to the change during your upgrade.
