&lt;h2&gt;&lt;span&gt;Cause&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Self-managed hotfix packages meant for Windows contained the Unix Kafka version instead of the Windows version. This incompatibility caused Kafka to fail startup for&amp;nbsp;sites using these&amp;nbsp;hotfixes.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;&lt;span&gt;Action&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;span&gt;For hotfixes released on Nov 3, 2023 and later, hotfix packages for Windows and Linux are separated. Starting from the following hotfixes from 21.4 to 23.3, pick the relevant hotfix package for your Operating System (Linux/Windows) accordingly and follow the&amp;nbsp;&lt;a href="https://docs.appian.com/suite/help/23.3/Hotfixes.html#Installation"&gt;updated instruction&lt;/a&gt;s to apply the hotfix.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

&lt;h2&gt;&lt;span&gt;Symptoms&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;After applying hotfixes released after June 5th on versions 21.3 and higher, Appian on Windows fails to start Kafka, thus preventing the site from starting up.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Zookeeper is able to start up after hotfix application&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;li&gt;During Kafka startup, the following message is repeated constantly in the console output&amp;nbsp;&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;pre style="padding-left:30px;"&gt;waiting for process Kafka&lt;br /&gt;waiting for process Kafka&lt;br /&gt;waiting for process Kafka&lt;br /&gt;waiting for process Kafka&lt;/pre&gt;
&lt;ul&gt;
&lt;li&gt;Eventually, Kafka fails to start with the following errors in the console output:
&lt;pre&gt;Service Kafka failed to start&lt;br /&gt;Error running script: Unable to start transaction log.&lt;br /&gt;Unable to start distributed transaction log. Check the Kafka and Zookeeper logs for more information.&lt;br /&gt;com.appian.komodo.StartKomodo$TransactionLogNotStartedException: Unable to start transaction log.&lt;/pre&gt;
&lt;/li&gt;
&lt;/ul&gt;
&lt;h2&gt;&lt;span&gt;Cause&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/h2&gt;
&lt;p&gt;As of June 12, the Windows and Unix installers contained different versions of Kafka. This change was backported through 21.3. However, all self-managed hotfix packages generated after June 12 contained the Unix Kafka version. The incompatibility caused Kafka to fail to start for all self-managed Windows customers after hotfix application.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Appian has merged the fix and merged into all the hotfixes available on docs.appian.com for version 21.3 and higher.&amp;nbsp;Note that&amp;nbsp;this is a short-term fix and requires manual intervention to function successfully.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Until further notified, all self-managed Windows customers using a hotfix package will require manual intervention described in Action section.&lt;/p&gt;
