Symptoms

External monitoring agents, which include but are not limited to Dynatrace, AppDynamics, and New Relic, can introduce unexpected behavior in Appian such as those listed below:

Package import or inspection not responding.
Generic errors thrown when clicking on Alerts, Process History, or Process Details in /designer.
File upload in Admin Console not working.
Tempo not loading properly.

This issue can present itself in many different ways, and the above examples do not cover all possible symptoms.

In some cases, the issue will first occur after an upgrade, even if the environment was working with the external monitoring agent prior to the upgrade.

Cause

These agents automatically inject JavaScript into the Appian HTML code, which can result in unexpected behavior in Appian.

Action

Disable the external monitoring agent.
Clear the application server cache per KB-1232.

If you are unable to resolve the error using the above steps, please create a ticket with Appian Technical Support for further investigation.

If you are using Dynatrace to monitor your Appian environment, it is important to note that Dynatrace can introduce unexpected behavior in Appian. Dynatrace automatically injects a JavaScript agent into Appian HTML code. We have seen this result in client side issues such as:

package import or inspection not responding
generic errors thrown when clicking on Alerts, Process History, or Process Details in /designer
file upload in Admin Console not working
Tempo not loading properly

This does not cover every scenario and the examples above should not be taken as an all-encompassing picture.

If you are running Dynatrace on an Appian environment and discover issues like the ones mentioned above, please disable Dynatrace as a troubleshooting step. In general, any tool injecting JavaScript into Appian could potentially impact the functionality of the platform. If you encounter similar issues and you're using similar tools such as New Relic, AppDynamics, etc., please disable them as a troubleshooting step.
