KB-1435 Crashes related to Apache Lucene library

Symptoms

The Java Virtual Machine hosting the application server experiences a crash. A crash hs_err_pid*.log file will be generated, containing any one of the following references as the problematic frame:

org.apache.lucene.store.ByteBufferIndexInput.readByte()B
org.apache.lucene.codecs.blocktree.SegmentTermsEnumFrame.loadBlock()V
~StubRoutines::jshort_disjoint_arraycopy

Cause

This is caused by a known issue with certain versions of the Lucene library. See LUCENE-6943 for additional details.

Action

Update the JVM to the latest supported version for your instance of Appian. If the issue persists after this action, please open a case with Appian Technical Support.

Affected Versions

This article applies to all self-managed versions of Appian.
