Clean and Green

*** FINALIST ***
Our Application helps Municipal Corporations of different cities in, effective waste management by handling the pick up of waste in IoT-enabled Bins. It also maintains Air Pollution data of each city and keeps the citizens posted via Social media.

Process of building:
  • Our proposed Smart waste management solution uses sensors placed in recycle bins to measure fill levels and to notify city collection services when bins are ready to be emptied.
  • Each bin will be assigned a Threshold limit, when reached, it calls Appian Web API which updates the status of the particular bin in the Appian Data base.
  • Solution utilizes Appian dynamic Case Management to assign a task to a pick up driver to empty the bin.
  • It also Uses Google Maps API to define the optimized route for the pick up of bins.
  • A weather API is called and the air quality data for each city is stored in Appian data base every day and when the AQI value reaches threshold, a campaign message is posted in Twitter and Facebook.
Inspiration:
In most countries / cities, waste collection still seems to be managed using traditional methods and the adoption of technology to make it efficient is not fast enough, also monitoring of air pollution is something that is tracked – but not quite integrated to public service provisioning.
We wanted to build a solution that would help not just corporates but also common citizens to lead a better life.
Problems with current process :
Current process is reactive in nature - leading to Inefficient use of fuel, Inefficient use of manpower, Unstructured data collection, Time management , Inefficient management of air pollution levels.
Technologies Used:
 Appian , My SQL
Integrations:
Google Maps Integration, Weather API Integration, Twitter and Facebook Integration.

  • I really like the fact that your proposed smart waste management solution uses sensors placed in the garbage cans to measure fill levels and notify city trash collection services when the bins are ready to be emptied. It's incredibly convenient, and I recently read about it on samplius.com/.../ and how it has helped reduce landfills in large cities.
