Is it mandatory to place @Version annotation on top of the key attribute to maintain versioning??

Is there any other alternative for version maintainance??

You can use it anywhere in the XSD using @Vesion annotation

There are two ways to achieve your requirement. the first one is using @version annotation.
the other is you can have a version column in the database which you can update manually.
