Does Windows OS have to be the same for all VMs or can the VMs be in different OS?

Is there any dependency between the servers (DB/APP/Engine) in terms of OS or are they independent? So if DB server is using Windows OS 2008 and App server is using Windows OS 2012, Would Appian work?

There should be no problems with using different OSes (or OS versions)
