We are running 6.6.1 with Spring Security using the LDAP intergration. Has anyone been able to get SSO to work using the out of the box functionality?...

Have you configured SSO provider with spring security & spring portal? There are other items you need to do on the server side (such as creating key tab) etc., as well.
