In case it's helpful to others, I just got a really helpful tip for getting emails for my local installation of Appian. I needed this so I could get the reset password emails for my test users.

Download the tool here and run the jar to start the client: nilhcem.github.io/.../

Per the documentation here (forum.appian.com/.../Mail_Server_Setup.html), you'll also need to set the STMP property (conf.mailhandler.mail.smtp.host) in custom.properties to be your localhost. So the way I quickly did this is to copy my conf.suite.SERVER_AND_PORT property and remove the :8080 part. Deploy the updated file via the configure script, and start up Appian.
