Recommended Linux OS for Appian Installation

Hi All,

We are in seeking inputs over the use of Linux version for Appian installation. The scale of our application is very huge and need to have a software setup which will support long term enhancements and changes.

Can anyone suggest which is a better Linux for such a scenario. Is it CentOS or RHEL? Which one will be suitable for longer run and which one is better to scale-up further if required. Also inputs on performance of the two are appreciated

Thank You in advance!!

  • CentOS and RHEL are almost the same(both are RedHat distros), with only a slight difference. For RHEL, you have to pay. In turn you get enterprise level support. Redhat promises upto 10 years of support for RHEL. CentOS on the other hand is free, but it does not have support from Redhat. There will ofcourse be free upgrades, but for any issues you won't get support from Redhat for CentOS.

Regarding performance, they do not differ much. Most of the times on Linux server, GUI is not enabled, and only bare-minimum software is installed. A bare CentOS/Redhat machine with minimum software will take less than 300-400MB RAM. You can certainly use clustering - you can have JBOSS/WebSphere on multiple machines and run Appian across the distributed environment
  • As most Linux Distros are not much different in performance and features it depends on what level of support you need/want on OS level.
