Appian not responding, apian engine timer errorin the logs

I am new to apian and just completed an installation. I started Appian and JBOSS and they appear to be running. However tail -f shows many errors of the sort "Caught unexpected exception in Appian Engine Timer"
has anyone seen this before? Where can I start looking for trouble shooting?

Hi Pedro,
To help diagnose this, it would be great if you could attach a more complete error snippet! Also, have you run the checkengine scripts located at <APPIAN_HOME>/server/_scripts/diagnostic and verified that the engines are all reporting ok?

@samw893 run the diagnostics I found them helpful. I would also like to thank everyone who helped. Their suggestions helped sort things out.
