Effect of updating CDTs on process model instances that use the updated CDT

Hi guys,
I have updated a CDT in my app and all old instaces of processes were afected by this update.
The CTD in all old instances of processes stayed with the simbol "^1"
Is this behave occurate ? is there a way to update the old instances without compromise the application ?

    I have used long ago it to upgrade process instance with cdt variables of same type as it failed for previous versions of cdts. May be it can resolve your issue.
