MYSQL Free vs Enterprise Edition

What is the difference in performance or scalability while using MY SQL Free vs Enterprise Edition?
Specifically when the number of open connections is high from Appian to the db(>500)

According the the MySQL documentation it appears to be 60x better. They have a graph in the link below that displays the transactions per second in relation to database connections.
