How to capture a field from within a record of an external Database and then compare if it's new or existing

I need to capture a transaction ID from an external application (which I suppose Appian wil be able to connect to), and once captured I need to compare if system already has that transaction value ..

Can I use  a script task ? If so, how do I configure it for capturing a field?
