So when is it advantageous to use a CDT for the summary view compared to the recordtype input rule?
From my perspective there is no benefit in using a CDT. RecordTypes are the way to go except when there is a reason to use a CDT.

I agree with Stefan.
The Summary view usually has more info/data than the list view.
In cases where you only showing what's on list view it may be beneficial (with 1 less query) to just pass in the data from using rv!. In those cases combined with record sync enabled it may have overall better performance too.
