I am getting two recordtypes with the same name. Pls suggest why and how to make it a single one. Each of the two 'Product Recordtype' is referenced in different locations. Pls suggest how to make them into one and all referencing objects should refer to a single one.

I suggest to pick the one which is used less and rename it. Then check for dependencies and change these to the correct one. This is a full manual task.
Alright. Is there a way i can permanently delete the unwanted one?
No...actually one of the recordtypes i had deleted from my object list. so it does not show up in the object list, but it still shows up in the autoprompts. The deleted recordtype and the existing recordtype has the same name and hence creates confusion.
