What would be a good way to aggregate data records (or data record types) to display in a list? Appian supports the aggregation of record types in charts - I wonder if there is an easy way to display aggegration results in tables.

You create your query using the query wizard and display the result in a grid. This is similar to charts. Do you have any specific questions.

I was just wondering if there is a way without having to define an additional query, just as in the chart option. As suspected, that is not the case - so for me its not similar to charts. :-)
a!queryRecordType supports fetching, filtering and aggregating related data. This is what the charts are doing and this is what you can do as well. The documentation includes some nice examples.
