We recently set the DEFAULT_VISIBILITY in our custom.properties file to NONE. The goal of this change was we didn't want the Users record list appearing to the public. Now, one of the consequences is that searching by user doesn't work, even if searching by username, so our internal users cannot search for processes by who started it when trying to help a customer. Is there anyway to get the search to work, other than undoing our change to DEFAULT_VISIBILITY?

If you have certain subsets of users who are allowed to see another subset (and not the other way around), you can use the User Security smart service.
forum.appian.com/.../Modify_User_Security_Smart_Service.html
For example: You set default visibility to none so that basic users don't have rights to the profiles and other user details. If you have internal users that do need those rights, you can then run this smart service to give the internal users view access on all of these basic users, while still restricting the basic user access.
