Appian mentions in the documentation that you can actually update the attributes such as Related Actions, Record Views of the Users Record Type(at https://forum.appian.com/suite/help/16.1/User_Management.html#Configuring_Tempo_User_Profiles), so I believe that care would be taken by Appian during an version upgrade.
