We're having issues sending emails in processes: I am getting this alert in the log:
"Sender address rejected: User unknown in relay recipient table"
and this in Appian:
There is a problem with task “Send E-Mail” in the process “Update Password Reminder”. Failed to send email
Problem: An error occurred in executing an Activity Class
Our server is on a local machine (not cloud).
Can anyone suggest a solution?
NB:
1. The to address takes a user object, the user is active in the system, though we have tried non-system users & direct email addresses
2. There are no ACPs being handled at the node
3. The node runs as the designer...

I did a quick search on the error message
www.werockyourweb.com/.../550-5-1-0-sender-address-rejected-user-unknown-in-relay-recipient-table
and it appears that sender (from address) from which it's being sent is not recognized. Whome are you trying to send the email from? Can you check if you can send it as a process initiator (for testing purposes) and execute the process as yourself (and not as Appian Administrator account).

I was trying to send the email from the 'process model', but sending from the process initiator has worked.. should I make changes to the server config to fix this- if so, can you point this out?

I think the issue could be with your mail server which is treating email going out from an address that is not register in its registry as an invalid email. Probably correct in terms of preventing spams or spoofing. In terms of the changes, it depends on your business requirement as to whom the email should go out as. If you want to have a generic email address, you can configure one - See

- Just make sure whatever address you use is a valid one so you don't end up with the same issue.
