I know the barcode will work on mobile by default since t's mobile. But it's there a way to make it work on a laptop or desktop computer using the camera? By default Appian only allows to enter text into the filed, but I would also like to scan barcodes using my laptop or PC camera.

Alas, no, Jose
This is documented https://docs.appian.com/suite/help/19.3/Barcode_Component.html
I know it's not the answer you wanted, but you can always grab a USB barcode scanner from a store online for $15 and use that to scan the barcode values directly into the field. These are essentially input devices.
I worry that the user experience of barcode scanning from a PC webcam wouldn't be very good.
Robert, Thanks for the info. Have you tried using the USB scanner? If so, how did it work out for you?
I have a little hands-on experience with USB barcode scanners from my previous career as a retail hardware tech - in all cases that I saw, basically the barcode reader sends keyboard input (i.e. as if a user had typed the scanned value) immediately upon reading a barcode. This might vary by particular model and brand of reader, and internal settings, but in general I think this is what you can expect the behavior to be.
