I have a question regarding the text field type within a CDT. This type has a character limit of 255 characters. Is there any way to increase this or is there another type that is used for longer form text such as paragraphs and paragraph fields within an interface?

Text length is not limited to 255 characters, that is only the default size when building out your CDT in the GUI. AFAIK, max character length is only limited by your database configuration.
To increase, simply type in a higher value in the Length field..
This limit becomes relevant as soon as you persists that CDT to database. Then 4000 is max. For more text, you need to modify the XSD file and add a larger column type like TEXT.
