As per my understanding there are limitations on the special characters that can be part of the Appian Username, First Name, Last Name other attributes of the user profile. I see list valid special characters for username field are present in the link
forum.appian.com/.../User_Management.html
Can anybody help me to know the valid characters related to the other user attributes (mainly mandatory fields like First Name, Last Name, email etc.)?

Also can we remove these restrictions by chaninging configurations on the server?...

The only restricted fields are: 1. Username 2. Email (since it has to contain the @) These restrictions cannot be changed.

We have LDAP synch process and one of the users is having special characters in his last name in Active Directory. This user synchronization fails due to the special characters.
I tried creating a new user in Appian designer and entered special characters in last name, but it doesn't allow entering many of the special characters except few (like @ _- etc)

I have attached the screen shot for the same.
Same behaviour is seen with first name also.

It seems it's not documented but looking at the logic in charge of validating the First Name, Middle and Last Names they are indeed subject to character validation. Those are slightly different from the username validation. The restriction is:
It can start with (one or more) space(s), any letter, ', -, _,
