Is there any issue using the interface designer to save normal expressions? This would be practical to leverage the autocomplete functionality of the interface designer....

You should be able to use the interface designer to create regular rules; the only problem you will find is that in the interface designer you will get that interface definition is not a valid component. But the rule should be completely functional.
