one question related to user profile customProperty: we would like to use the 10 custom properties to store some user related information. we found a plugin-in ( Update User Profile (Advanced) Plug-in) in forum to set custom property, it works great, but it is pretty old , last updated 4/2010.

Is it safe to continue using this plugin in appian 7.8? Or is there any system provided function to update the 10 custom properties ?...

Yes it is, the API to update those fields hasn't change and any public API deprecation is announced well in advanced in the release notes.
